6 Proven Steps to Make More Money as a Freelance Copywriter
As a copywriter who’s been freelancing for 5+ years, I often get asked “How did you go from small $200 projects to commanding $2–3k consistently?”
The journey from side hustle to full-time thriving business wasn’t easy. But looking back, there were 6 key steps I took in that first year that helped me level up my rates and earn more as a freelance copywriter.
I recently shared these with copywriters in a live masterclass, and wanted to outline them for you too. So if you’re wondering how to start making more money with copywriting, here are my proven strategies:
1. Narrow Down Your Niche
When I first started, I took on any writing project that came my way. Blogs, emails, social posts — you name it! But being a “jack of all trades” copywriter doesn’t pay well or attract ideal clients.
The first thing I did was niche down into website copywriting specifically. When you specialize, you’re seen as an expert, you can streamline your process, and you can charge higher rates.
2. Develop a Signature Process
Once I narrowed down, I created a consistent workflow for delivering website projects start to finish. This was crucial! Clients are willing to pay more when you have a proven process versus just winging it.
Outline your step-by-step system including research, strategy, framework, drafting, revisions, and results. This builds huge trust and value.
3. Offer Packages, Rather Than Hourly
When I got started I was charging by the hour. Packaging your services into fixed-priced options helps you earn more per project.
When you quote packages vs hourly, you guide clients to the appropriate solution instead of an endless and uncertain budget. Make sure your pricing matches the value you provide.
4. Get on Discovery Calls
I started requiring a discovery call for any project over $500. This is where you truly connect with the client, discover their needs, and build excitement to work with you.
Never skip the discovery call — it’s the perfect chance to showcase your process and close the sale. The sale is made in the discovery all, every time.
5. Create Irresistible Proposals
My proposals used to be complicated and only offered one price. Now I spend time crafting compelling proposals that make the project steps super clear, and the value undeniable.
Walk through your process, outline deliverables, share case studies, add visuals, and create a clear call-to-action. Make saying yes a no-brainer.
6. Cultivate a Sales Mindset
Some copywriters shy away from “selling.” But at the end of the day, we are running businesses that require sales skills to thrive.
Adopt an abundance mentality. Get comfortable guiding clients through your process. And learn to effectively communicate your immense value. Success mindset is everything!
Implementing these 6 steps took my copywriting income to the next level in just 12 months. It requires strategy and a willingness to see yourself as a true service professional versus just a writer. But with consistency, you can get there!
