4 Words You should Replace in Your Marketing
Marketing is more than clever hashtags, cute photos and beautiful color palettes.
Words sell. People buy your product or service after they read the words you use, so write with intention and avoid these 4 words in your marketing.
Before we continue, let’s be clear what we mean by marketing. In my world, marketing includes your website, sales pages, lead generators, emails, blog and social media posts. And, we can’t forget FB and IG ads.
So, in reality, anywhere you use words, watch out for using too many of these taboo words:
- I
- MY
- US
- OUR
The #1 place I see this mistake is in the menu bar of websites. We’ve all seen the menu bar that has pages like Our Story, About Me, Our Vision, My Mission…right??
People don’t come to your website only to read about you, they are trying to solve a problem that is important to them. They see themselves as the priority (sure that seems a bit self absorbed), so don’t start by talking about yourself.
The next place I see people abuse these words is in their email marketing.
I understand that emails should be personal, (#newslettersaredead), but if you make it too personal, and every sentence starts with “I”, you’ll find people check out quickly.
People like to see themselves in the story. They want to be drawn in quickly, and words will do this, if you choose the right ones.
Here’s an example of how many people describe what they do:
I’m an experienced copywriter who clarifies messaging and simplifies the words on websites. I help business owners attract and convert more customers.
Here’s a simple tweak to tell people what you do, without making it about you:
Too many business owners overwhelm and confuse their customers with the message on their website. Get copywriting that clarifies and simplifies your message so you can attract and convert more customers.
Your mission is to go back through your marketing messages and circle every time you use the words:
- I
- MY
- US
- OUR
And see if you can replace them with messaging that is focused on your customer and audience that will draw them in, rather than making it all about you.
